Meeting Bea and creating this art together was such a joy.
When planning her senior photos, Bea was looking for a callback to her NYC childhood while honoring her creative, artistic curiosity. We planned to trapeze around Fountain Square, taking in the murals and stopping for a vibe/outfit change at some point along the way. With Fountain Square and Fletcher Place as a backdrop, I knew the photos would be great, but seeing Bea relax in front of the camera as we learned more about each other really led to some of my favorite senior portraits I have ever taken.
On the day of the session the weather was, well, a typical dreary, sprinkling January day in Indiana– but all the moving parts had aligned, and regardless of weather– these photos were happening. And, my goodness, you wouldn’t know that by looking at these photos – only if you were there to experience how cold we were before seeking solace at Hot Boyz Chicken. [And a moment for how wondrous of a back drop the hot chicken place in F. Square is…]
I learn from every session I do, however Bea kindly requesting I “leave in the towing sign, it’s okay,” or “what about one by the dumpster?” warmed me up as she emphasized the beauty in the setting *just as it is.* What a precious truth that I hope Bea always protects.
While taking senior portraits is a service I have provided over a hundred times (and what helped really grow my business a decade ago!), what I truly love about the experience is getting to know, see, and reflect the young adult in front of me to themselves, their family, and their future self. Bea revealed that she has really had an interest and love for languages and that one of her favorite parts of studying language is meeting new people. It is our greatest hope that years from now, when I’m sure Bea has met thousands of people, she is able to look back at these photos and meet herself– the super cool, creative, empowered, and sure-of-themself being that gave me the absolute honor of documenting this moment in this chapter.
If you’ve got a senior about to graduate, or are looking to have a session in downtown Indianapolis, contact me. I’d be happy to be a part of your creative vision!
